چکیده

Scattered-light photoelasticity provides a nondestructive approach for analyzing the stresses in a 3-D photoelastic model. However the applicability of scattered-light photoelasticity is quite limited. In this paper, a finite element scheme is proposed to simulate the fringe patterns resulted from scattered-light photoelastic experiment. Theoretical equations are derived to integrate the retardation of successive elements having various secondary principal stress directions. Two examples were studied. One is a diametric compressed circular disk model for simulating the non-rotating secondary principal stress direction case. The other is an L-shaped cantilever plate loaded at one end to simulate the case with rotating secondary principal stress direction. Both results are compared fairly well with the experimental results. Detailed finite element procedure and results will be presented and discussed.

Extraction of Load Information from Photoelastic Images Using Neural Networks

Photoelastic materials develop colored fringes under white light when subjected to mechanical stresses which can be viewed through a polariscope. This technique has traditionally been used for stress analysis of loaded components, however, this can also be potentially used in sensing applications where the requirement may be measurement of the stimulating forces causing the generation of the fr...

Image Processing Code for Sharpening Photoelastic Fringe Patterns and Its Usage in Determination of Stress Intensity Factors in a Sample Contact Problem

This study presented a type of image processing code which is used for sharpening photoelastic fringe patterns of transparent materials in photoelastic experiences to determine the stress distribution. C-Sharp software was utilized for coding the algorithm of this image processing method. For evaluation of this code, the results of a photoelastic experience of a sample contact problem between a...

Chaotic pattern of unsmoothed isochromatics around the regions of concentrated stresses

Photoelastic isochromatics are computationally reconstructed from the results of finite element analysis. Fast variation of the components of stresses cannot be approximated by a coarse non-adaptive finite element mesh. Visually chaotic and attractive looking pattern of numerically reconstructed photoelastic fringes prevents interpretation of the field of stresses around the regions of concentr...

Photoelastic Fringe Pattern Analysis by Image Processing

This work presents a strategy for automatic analysis of photoelastic fringe patterns. The study is focused on the analysis of color type photoelastic fringes. By capturing and analyzing color fringes automatically, the difference between principal stresses of a sample are quantitatively determined. Among many techniques available in literature, the color photoelasticity is chosen as the basis f...
